It will be noticed, that decades of the fastest railway development were that with 1850 to 1860, after gold opening in California, and two between 1870 and 1890. We have added 70 000 miles to our railway system between 1880 and 1890-a the report to which no other country was equaled. To 1892 we, apparently, have met more urgent requirements of new lines, and we annually build now less than 2000 miles of new roads. The face-value of the capital which now invest in the American railways, makes 11,000,000,000$. Number of the people employed in railway service, 850 000.
